All About HMB


HMB (Betahydroxybetamethylbutrate) has been shown to provide benefits for strength, power, and endurance exercise. It is a metabolite of the amino acid leucine and has been studied for its ability to enhance muscle hypertrophy, improve aerobic performance, reduce muscle damage, and support recovery. In other words, HMB may help your muscles grow, improve endurance, reduce soreness from resistance training, and increase your body's ability to recover between workouts.


One of HMB's primary mechanisms is reducing muscle protein breakdown by decreasing activity within the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS), which is one of the body's main pathways for breaking down damaged or unnecessary proteins. By limiting excessive protein degradation while stimulating muscle protein synthesis through the mTOR (mechanistic target of rapamycin) pathway, HMB creates a more favorable environment for building and maintaining muscle mass.


Research also suggests that HMB may support mitochondrial biogenesis—the process of increasing the number and function of mitochondria within muscle cells. Since mitochondria produce ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the body's primary energy currency, improvements in mitochondrial function may contribute to better endurance, recovery, and overall exercise performance.


This is one of the reasons I recommend supplementing HMB alongside creatine. Creatine primarily enhances high-intensity strength and power output, while HMB may help reduce muscle breakdown and improve recovery. Together, they can complement each other for strength, endurance, and overall training performance.


Recently, I've added outdoor running to my strength-training program, and I noticed how much fatigue heavy lifting—especially deadlifts—was carrying over into my runs. Deadlifts place a significant demand on the posterior chain and nervous system, and my lower back would often become so fatigued that I'd have to shorten my runs because of the soreness.


Since I started taking HMB, I've noticed a significant reduction in that lingering muscle soreness. I'm able to recover faster and train harder throughout the week without feeling as beat up the next day. While this is just my personal experience, it's been one of the most noticeable supplements I've added to my routine. I only wish I had learned about it earlier in my lifting journey.


I'm also recommending HMB to some of my older clients who are experiencing age-related muscle loss or difficulty recovering from training. While it's not a replacement for proper nutrition or resistance exercise, the research suggests it can be a valuable tool for supporting muscle health as we age. All in all none of these supplements will have significant effects without an adequate amount of sleep.
